Plane Too Speedy for Miss America [1931]

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Gar Wood, American speed boat king, gave the spectators at the Biscayne Bay Regatta a thrill between races when he unlimbered his Miss America IX in which he hopes to establish a new world's speed record for the mile straightaway run.

Wood raced an airplane, piloted by Duke Schiller, but no official time of his run was kept. The Miss America got away ahead of the plane but fell behind before the finish line was reached.
