Arizona Governor's Cup
Lake Pleasant, Phoenix AZ, September 29, 1968

From The History of Big Boat Racing in Arizona

The big boats first came to the Grand Canyon State when, in the early fall of 1968, a drought struck California. With water levels too low to support the mammoth hydros at Sacramento, the event was shifted to Lake Pleasant, 30 miles north of Phoenix. The Phoenix Jaycees put on the show and drew an estimated 20,000 spectators on Sept. 29. Bill Sterett and the Miss Budweiser outran Miss Bardahl and Harrah's Club to the checkered flag, sweeping all three heats.
