Muncey Takes World Title Madison's Greatest Hydro-Race Disaster Statistics

The flood waters of the Ohio River were still loaded with floating debris, but it didn't keep Bill Muncey and Atlas Van Lines from winning the World's Championship Race on the Madison, Indiana, course on the Fourth of July. Rain squalls added to the flooded state of the river and conditions became so bad the final 15-mile heat was cancelled. Patrol boats couldn't sweep the raging river clear of the increasing rafts of debris.

Muncey breezed in first in his two elimination heats and was declared the winner by Kenneth Wright, referee of the day, just before sundown.

Final Standings: Atlas Van Lines, 800 points; Budweiser, 625; Go Gale, 600; Timex, 525; Pizza Pete, 469; Pay N Pak, 400; Towne Club, 225.
