A sudden reversal of form found Mark Tate and his Smokin' Joe's the victors in today's San Diego Bayfair KCBQ Bill Muncey Cup on Mission Bay. He stormed past Mark Evans and the Miss Vons to win a restarted final, precipitated by the first-lap crash of Miss Budweiser. Without the Bud around, Smokin' Joe's climbed back atop the Eagle Snacks Presents O'Doul's High Point championship lead, 12,214 to the Budweiser's 12,175, with only Honolulu remaining on the 1995 Hooters Unlimited Hydroplane Series schedule.
But all this didn't seem possible an hour before. Chip Hanauer had set a world record speed of 172.166 miles an hour in qualifying, cruised to three easy preliminary heat wins and seemed poised to sweep the boards. The Smokin' Joe's had blown a prop, destroyed a motor, tore up a drive shaft and had a gaping hole in the bottom of the boat after Heat 3B, which was shortened to two laps when Tate's craft also briefly caught fire.
But then the Budweiser violently crashed entering the second turn of the first lap at some 165 miles an hour. The 6,000-pound unlimited hydroplane hooked a wave and lost its right sponson, causing it to cartwheel and land upside down. Hanauer was able to free himself from the safety cockpit and swim to the surface and gave a thumbs-up sign to rescuers. He said afterward he felt fine.
The Bud was fending off a challenge from Smokin' Joe's, which had almost miraculously been put back together by Jim Lucero and his crack crew in less than an hour. Then Tate got a good start from lane four and was right on Bud's right rear when Hanauer's chances of victory dissolved in a huge spray of water and bright red boat parts.
Tate got another good start in the re-run, and had only to deal with Evans when defending Muncey Cup champion Dave Villwock's PICO boat stalled on a warmup lap. Steve David, who hadn't started a heat all day due to his engine devouring too much salt water, managed to scramble into the final by winning the provisional heat and then finished third overall. It was that kind of a day.
