In one of the most unusual Gold Cups of all time an entry won the race without placing in the first heat. Only in 1940 had no boat completed the 90 miles and this was because the winning Hotsy Totsy III was flagged off the course with 2 of the 12 laps left to go in the final heat as a result of exceeding the nine minute time limit for finishing after the leading boat. Slo-mo-shun IV ran 16 laps of the 30 lap race in solo splendor. If she had not have kept going the race would have gone to Miss Pepsi on the basis of her magnificent first heat. Also of note is the fact that Hurricane IV was disqualified in heat two for making a start five minutes after the gun. If she had placed in heat two, all she would have had to do was keep running in the final heat to win the race.
